Part I Ethics of an Impeachment Trial Reminder: This is not a partisan exercise; meaning it does not matter what your political leanings or beliefs are – Republican, Democrat, Independent, or otherwise. Our ultimate goal in this course is to be able to understand and apply the ethical theories we study throughout this course. Question: The Impeachment Trial of former President, Donald Trump, provides us with a unique opportunity to practice objective, non-biased observation; ultimately, forming an informed opinion based upon rational thought and critical reasoning, by applying our ethical analysis. Now that you have watched the trial, please explain the moral correctness (or lack thereof) of the Opening Arguments made during the trail. Feel free to discuss anything else, including the final outcome of no conviction, but with more than a bi-partisan majority voting in favor of conviction. Your responses must include the use of each of the four ethical theories that we have discussed in this course – Utilitarianism, Deontology, Virtue theory, and the Ethic of Care. (1-2 page minimum response required) Note: You will be graded solely based upon your analysis and NOT on your conclusions, which you may or may not even believe; that’s your personal business. Part II Million Dollar Morality Watching the movie, “Million Dollar Baby” provides us with a unique opportunity to observe and evaluate many different types of moral dilemmas; applying the required analysis, using each of the four ethical theories that you have been learning. 1) Please make whatever efforts are necessary to watch the entire movie, Million Dollar Baby (2004) – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Million_Dollar_Baby (Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.); it’s available on many online outlets, such as Amazon Prime, YouTube, Google Play, and iTunes; and, 2) Then, be prepared to answer the questions below. WARNING: Spoiler Alert! Reading through the all of the questions before watching the movie has been known to “ruin” the movie, according to previous students. You will have no problem remembering the key information need to fully answer the questions. As you are writing your essay, please remember that this is an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of the terms and concepts that you have learned throughout this semester. I will ask you several general questions that allow you to provide detailed and thoughtful responses. It is my hope that you will take the opportunity to objectively study this movie, Million Dollar Baby, while still enjoying it. How does the example about Mr. Mafia, in the article (pp. 86-87), apply to Frankie (Clint Eastwood)? 4. How does the story about Dr. Kevorkian and his patient, Adkins, in the article Justifying Physician-Assisted Deaths, apply to the Maggie (Hillary Swank) and Frankie (Clint Eastwood)? 5. Please describe the moral correctness or incorrectness of Frankie (Clint Eastwood), as evaluated using the Virtue Ethics and Feminism theories that we have discussed this semester. 6. How does the family of Maggie (Hillary Swank) represent one of the primary concerns with Euthanasia, as discussed in the class readings? 7. Please define the concept of Autonomy. Also, please provide specific examples of how this concept applies to Maggie (Hillary Swank) and any other characters in the movie. 8. Please provide any other observations that you wish to share regarding this movie; either concerns, favorite parts, or new understandings. There are many different relationships and, thus, moral dilemmas throughout the movie. THE PAPER: Your final product should be a approximately 5 pages in length (minimum), due on March 14, 2021, NLT midnight. You will be graded for the overall product, so be sure to provide detailed and complete analysis. Please do not just give your opinions; instead, provide thought analysis using the four ethical theories, You may have noticed that I keep reminding you to use your ethical theories; probably because it′s REALLY important. You can write this paper in short-answer responses, or essay format of your choice – DOUBLE-SPACED/ONE-INCH MARGIN.
